Local Schools Respond to Social Media Threats

The Pearl River Central and Picayune school districts have responded to social media threats that surfaced on Snapchat, targeting their middle and high schools. Both districts have worked closely with law enforcement, and no credible threats have been identified.

The Picayune School District stated parents, after receiving reports of threats aimed at Picayune Junior High and Picayune Memorial High School. In the statement, the district assured parents that the matter is under thorough investigation and that state, federal, and local law enforcement agencies are involved.

“We received information from students about a social media post on Snapchat concerning threats to Picayune Jr. High School and Picayune Memorial High School. Multiple state, federal, and local law enforcement agencies are involved in this investigation. No credible threat to the Picayune School District has been identified,” the district’s statement read.

Picayune school officials thanked students for reporting the information and noted that similar threats have been circulating nationwide over the past week. The district urged the community to remain patient as they continue to work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of all students.

Pearl River Central (PRC) School District also addressed similar threats at its middle and high schools. PRC Superintendent John Shows reiterated that while no credible threat has been confirmed, increased law enforcement presence will remain on campus.

“We have had additional law enforcement on campus today, and more officers will be on campus tomorrow,” Shows said.

Both districts have emphasized the importance of vigilance and encourage parents and students to report suspicious activity as the investigation continues.
