Two vehicle collision closes I-59 for 2 hours

Traffic in the northbound lane of Interstate 59 was closed for about two hours Wednesday night due to a two-vehicle collision.
Picayune Police Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said the accident was called in that night just after 10. Emergency personnel responded to the intersection of West Union Road to find that a northbound 18-wheeler collided with the rear of a Nissan Frontier pulling a utility trailer, causing traffic on the interstate to close for about two hours. Traffic was diverted at Exit 6 while crews removed the damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Investigation into the accident showed that the driver of the 18 wheeler said he was in the right lane of the interstate when the foggy conditions made it hard to see the slower traffic in front of him. The driver of the 18-wheeler swerved to avoid a collision but struck the rear of a trailer being towed by the Nissan, causing the Nissan to roll over, and the 18-wheeler to jackknife, Magri said.
Medical personnel with AAA Ambulance Service and the Picayune Fire Department responded, but there were no reports of major injuries or fatalities to the occupants of the vehicles. Magri said no arrests were made as a result of the accident.
