A two vehicle collision that occurred Wednesday afternoon in the northbound lane of I-59 involved an 18-wheeler and a U-Haul truck.
Cleanup of the accident snarled traffic due to the need to shut down a lane of the interstate for several hours.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Chase Elkins said the accident occurred when an 18-wheeler and a U-Haul, both northbound in the right lane of I-59, collided. The collision occurred when the 18-wheeler struck the rear of the U-Haul, Elkins said. After the two vehicles collided, both vehicles left the interstate on the right side of the asphalt.
The U-Haul rolled over and came to rest on the edge of the tree line, he said. The 18-wheeler’s trailer jackknifed towards the cab, causing the cab to detach from the vehicle and come to rest in the tree line as well.
Elkins said both drivers were transported to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for treatment of minor injuries.
