A representative from the Solace Hospice in Poplarville provided an informational presentation at the Senior Center of South Pearl River County Monday morning.
Community liaison Melinda Carli, spoke to visitors the center about seniors about hospice and told them about an upcoming Veterans Administration information workshop, scheduled for Aug. 3rd at the National Guard Armory in Poplarville at 9 a.m. The presentation will educate citizens about recent changes made to the VA program to better assist veterans and their spouses.
“Earlier, veterans were required to go to a VA facility…with the new administration in place one can go to their own doctors for their VA assistance,” Carli said.
Carli also spoke about an effort to start a group caregiver support program, with the first meeting set for Aug. 14 at Scooter’s, located at 613 S. Main St., Poplarville. The program will begin at 6 p.m., and will educate senior citizens about how to handle emergency situations involving the care of another.
Carli said the program will cover the signs of someone suffering from a stroke, how to describe an accident to emergency personnel and how to provide care to an individual who cannot take care of their own physical needs.
The Bereavement Support Group will hold a meeting at 7 p.m., to help seniors cope with the loss of a loved one, Carli said.
Carli invited seniors to participate in an Alzheimer’s walk set for Nov. 10 at Poplarville’s City Park. The event will feature music and arts and crafts, she said.
