PICAYUNE — Picayune’s boys golf team advanced to the Class 5A state tournament after a win Monday.
Picayune, Pearl River Central, Hattiesburg and North Pike competed in the District 8 tournament Monday morning at the Millbrook Golf Club in Picayune.
For a team to qualify to the state tournament, the top four individual scores are added together and the team has to shoot below 365.
For Picayune, Guidry shot 74, Timmy Turnage shot 82, M.J. Canulette carded 83 and Isaac Hickman shot 93 for a total of 332. Mark Griffiths was the fifth golfer for Picayune and shot 97.
“We have a young team as four of our golfers are freshman and one of them is in 10th grade,” Picayune Head Golf Coach Mark Summer said.
Picayune’s Guidry was the tournament’s overall winner shooting 74 on a 72-par course.
“I didn’t play my best out there today but I hung around and made some putts when I needed to,” Guidry said. “Heading into the state tournament, I’ll be mainly working on my driver. I’m excited that I’ll be playing with my teammates in the state tournament because I don’t like to play without them.”
Carson Cunningham, from Pearl River Central, and Jakoby Polk, from Hattiesburg, each carded 79, to finish second and third place. Both of them advanced to the state tournament as individuals.
PRC shot 390 as a team and finished in second place. Cunningham shot 79, Alex Musgrove and Chase Wheat each carded 100 and Blaise Beech shot 111.
The Class 5A state tournament will take place at Lake Caroline Golf Course in Madison on May 1st and 2nd.
