To begin Monday’s Pearl River County School Board meeting, Pearl River Central High School Principal Stacy Baudoin introduced the newest member of the Board, student representative Doc Herrin.
Herrin is involved in nearly all aspects of the District, Baudoin said. He is a member of the ROTC and National Honor Society and plays multiple sports, including soccer and cross country. Herrin also is a member of the science club and is expected to graduate as valedictorian of his class.
“I am excited for Doc to serve as one of the board members as he leads the student body of 2017,” Baudoin said.
Herrin will be the second student representative to join the Board, succeeding Seth Orgeron.
This year’s peer-chosen student representative said he has a lot of work ahead of him and is optimistic about the group of senior representatives he has working with him.
“Everyone on the Board are all really close friends. I think we can do a lot for this school and we are looking to get a lot done this year,” Herrin said.
The student representative mentioned a couple of goals he and his colleagues have established together, but the first objective he wishes to pursue is to construct an awning over the new walkway that leads to the cafeteria.
“When it’s raining at the high school, you either have to walk through the rain or walk through the middle school to get to the cafeteria. An awning would make things much easier for students,” he said.
Herrin already has his eyes on his future and plans to attend Ole Miss to study biomedical engineering.
“Prosthetics have always fascinated me and I definitely wish to pursue my studies in that aspect of the field,” Herrin said.
Herrin’s first monthly student report of the year will be during next month’s meeting on Oct. 2.
More coverage of Monday’s meeting will be included in Wednesday’s edition of the Item.
