Monday afternoon, an elderly woman was transported to the hospital after failing to yield to oncoming traffic before colliding with two cars and a light pole in the Claiborne Hill parking lot.
Hettie Gilcrease, 90, of 111 Teddy Lane in Picayune, was attempting to cross Highway 43 North, into the Claiborne Hill parking lot at the time of the accident, Picayune Police Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said. Gilcrease drove in front of a large westbound pick up truck, hauling a wood chipper.
The driver of the truck, identified as Casey Cagle, 55, of 35622 Mockingbird Lane in Pearl River, Louisiana, told officers on scene that after the vehicle crossed his lane of traffic, he attempted to swerve to miss Gilcrease, but ended up striking Gilcrease’s car on the passenger door, causing damage to both vehicles, Magri said.
After the initial impact, Magri said Gilcrease’s vehicle was forced westbound and struck a parked vehicle in the Claiborne Hill parking lot before colliding with a light pole. The parked car was unoccupied, Magri said.
Gilcrease suffered serious injuries, Magri said. She was immediately transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of her injuries. Her status is unknown at this time. Magri said Cagle initially complained of pain after the collision, but was not transported to the hospital.
