Living the simple life at Davis’ Trading Post

“This is not a high end antique store, but it’s not a thrift store either,” Tanya Morgan, owner of Davis’ Trading Post in Poplarville, said.
She returned to her hometown after retiring from the Army, Morgan said she took over her father’s shop, Useful Things, so he could go back to doing what he loved in the workshop.
From there, a space became available on the corner of South Main Street and West Church Street and Davis’ Trading Post was established.
Poplarville’s newest country store opened on Wednesday, and already regular visitors started to trickle in, Morgan said.
The shop features a variety of antiques, jewelry, collectibles, used and new furniture from her father’s workshop and a variety of other plants and trinkets.
“The stuff in here is stuff I like,” Morgan said. “I won’t ever pay a lot for it because I want everybody to be able to come and shop.”
You won’t find a price tag on any of her items, she said.
“Everything in here is already paid for,” Morgan said. As a result, her customers pay what they can, sometimes less than what it’s worth.
Raised by her grandmothers, Morgan said they instilled this mindset in her from a young age.
All walks of life are welcome, she said, especially young kids who like to come in to look at the collection of pocketknives or play with the little toy soldiers and a variety of other things for them to explore.
“I don’t mind if they get into stuff. If it breaks it’s just glass at the end of the day,” Morgan said.
With little pieces of history on display all around the shop, Morgan learns more about her stock every day, she said.
“I like it because a lot of the things I have remind you what everyone had to do to prepare something,” Morgan said.
Whether it’s her collection of farm tools, antique stoves and kitchen gadgets, more seasoned customers like to come and tell her about how they used to do their daily chores.
Regardless of politics or religion, Morgan said, people know what they’re supposed to do in life. This store is about living the simple life.
Too often, people get caught up in the latest fashions like $300 purses or expensive furniture, but her store is about going back to basics, Morgan said.
Davis’ Trading Post is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit the Facebook page or call 601-463-2619.
