FEMA assistance is now available

This week the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that Pearl River County residents can apply for individual federal assistance.
While the recent flooding that occurred last month was not on the level of Hurricane Issac, there were many homes in this area affected by the rising waters.
Of the more than 70 families impacted by the storm and its subsequent flooding, it’s important to remember no one lost their lives. That’s the bright side to any disaster.
Recovering from a flood is no easy task. There’s remodeling to take care of, furniture to buy and clothing to procure.
A couple of weeks ago the American Red Cross came in to provide assistance, but their efforts were just a start. The assistance being offered by FEMA will be just another stepping stone residents affected by this disaster will utilize to get back to normal.
So, if you know of someone who suffered flood damage but may not have heard FEMA is now offering this assistance, be sure to tell them they can apply by visiting the website at www.disasterassistance.gov, or calling 1-800-621-3362.
That will be the first step to have federal assistance provided.
If approved, these individuals could be approved for help with securing temporary housing, recouping property losses not covered by their insurance policy, seeking medical or dental care and even applying for low interest disaster loans that could help get those necessary repairs underway.
It will be a long road ahead as these homeowners remove flooded drywall, insulation and damaged belongings to bring their residences back to a pre-flood state. Rebuilding is never easy, but we should all keep in mind that Pearl River County is blessed to be able to rebuild.
