Flood recovery centers being established in county

In an effort to provide more assistance to flood victims, the Pearl River County Emergency Management office will be establishing flood recovery centers.
According to previous Item coverage, more than 75 homes were damaged in this county during the flooding, which occurred the week of March 11.
“We saw a continuing need in the county for assistance and had people that wanted to volunteer their help,” PRC EOC Public Information Officer Tony Bounds said. “We have not received any information regarding a Federal Disaster Declaration or FEMA assistance, which would allow residents to apply for federal assistance.”
Bounds said the EOC has been relying on help from non-profit organizations to provide assistance to flood victims who don’t have insurance.
Recovery centers will be established at the following locations: Pine Grove Baptist Church, located at 34 Pine Grove Road, Picayune and the Pearl River County Emergency Operations Center located at 810 Hwy. 11 S., Poplarville. The centers will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 1, 2, 4 and 5. The centers will be closed April 3.
In the next couple of days, Bounds said they are expecting about two to four inches of heavy rain in the area, but the Pearl River is still predicted to fall.
“There is flash flooding potential in areas prone to flooding, but nothing like we saw the week of March 11,” he said.
