According to the website Social Daily Post, Picayune ranks at No. 4 on the top 10 list of best cities to retire in Mississippi.

It cites the high percentage of retired locals and the low cost of living as two main reasons it is so attractive to retirees. The local shops, grocery stores and picturesque walking areas are also noted as assets to the town.

Denise Faller, a senior citizen who is semi-retired, moved to Picayune two years ago from the greater New Orleans area and is extremely pleased with her relocation. Faller is an administrative assistant at Picayune Main Street and also finds time to volunteer in order to stay involved in the community.

“There are a lot of opportunities to volunteer here and get involved in Picayune. I volunteer at the Manna Medical Clinic and Vacation Bible Church at Resurrection Life. I volunteer at the Senior Center of South Pearl River County; it’s a really good place to meet people and they provide a meal to people 60 and over,” Faller said.

Faller is also a member of the senior center.

She said she is really happy with how many Christian churches there are in Picayune—Faller attends a number of the local churches and says it’s nice to have a church on every corner.

Faller enjoys supporting the local economy by staying in Picayune to shop.

“Whenever possible, I shop local. I like the many stores you can find in the Picayune area, nice grocery stores. The amount of organizations here for people to stay active and stay involved are really great. There are also a lot of places where you can take part in water aerobics. The people here are nice, there’s very little crime and it is a place I feel safe and comfortable,” Faller said.
