The Pearl River Central Lady Blue Devils improved their record to 2-1 in a convincing 60-45 home victory over Lumberton.
Three Blue Devils scored in the double digits: senior guard Claire Lumpkin led the team with 15 points, sophomore Brooklyn Howe had 13 points and freshman guard Harlee Davis had 10 points. Lumpkin directed the offense deliberately and showed off her range as she drained three three-pointers in the game.
Davis, Lumpkin and junior guard Kayla Ryan passed the ball crisply on the perimeter allowing for a number of open looks for the Blue Devil shooters. Ryan chipped in with six points.
PRC did a good job on the glass, in particular, Howe grabbed six rebounds, Davis had seven and Ryan had four. Howe kept the ball high on offensive rebounds and went straight up resulting in a number of points in the paint.
Senior guard Kim Guitterrez provided a great lift off the bench with seven points and three rebounds. She played lock-down defense on the perimeter and gave Lumberton’s guards fits. This resulted in a number of steals and breakaway lay ups. She also featured a nice runner in the lane.
When PRC got to the free throw line, they converted. The team was 10 for 12 from the line, shooting at 83 percent, remarkable for the high school level.
“I thought we played hard, but we got sloppy at the end. Also, I think we benefited because we played two games already and that was their first game. So some of the mistakes we made in earlier games we’ve worked through.,” Head Coach Tony LaBella said.
One aspect that LaBella saw room for improvement on were the 20 turnovers committed by his squad.
“Just sloppy at the end, we gotta take better care of the ball,” LaBella said. “We had a lot of turnovers, didn’t finish the game as well, but I thought we played hard.”
PRC’s next game is at Poplarville on Nov. 17.
