On Oct. 15, the Honors Institute at Pearl River Community College will host veteran actor and Golden Globe and Emmy award winner Jeffrey Tambor at the Ethel Holden Brownstone Center for the Arts.
According to IMDB.com, Tambor stars in Amazon Prime’s show “Transparent” and is also known for television shows “Arrested Development” and “The Larry Sanders Show.”
His presentation is entitled “Performing Your Life: An Evening with Jeffrey Tambor,” a PRCC release states.
PRCC Honors Institute Director Stephen Black said Tambor’s performance will be a motivational one with Tambor speaking about his own life experiences.
The actor’s appearance is made possible by a grant from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation, Black said.
Since the creation of PRCC’s Honors Institute three years ago, the lecture series has featured ABC news correspondent John Quinones and theoretical physicist and NYU professor Michio Kaku, Black said.
The purpose of these lectures is to expose the community to people who don’t come this way often, he said. Residents are afforded the opportunity to meet the speakers personally.
This year, PRCC has 80 students enrolled in the honors programs at both Poplarville and Forrest County campuses, Black said. The presence of honors institutes at community colleges is becoming a national trend, he said. PRCC’s program is also a member of the National Collegiate and Honors Council, Black said.
High school students who score 25 or higher on their ACT and maintain a 3.4 GPA are eligible to apply, he said. However, a student may apply after completing 21 hours of college courses and maintaining a 3.4 GPA during their freshman year, Black said.
The institute also maintains an articulation agreement with major universities and upon completion of PRCC’s program, students may enter as a third year honors student, Black said. Last year, a PRCC honor student entered Columbia University’s honors program.
Black said students may benefit from programs such as honors study space, labs, honors classes and a study abroad program. There is no extra tuition cost to attend the honors institute, he said. However, the study abroad program has an added cost.
This year, PRCC awarded $25,000 in scholarships to honors students, Black said.
Tambor’s performances will begin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15 and complimentary tickets may be obtained by contacting staff members at 601-403-1180.
