In August 2014, a group of parents formed the Poplarville School District’s parent teacher organization.
As a result of their efforts, the Poplarville High School football stadium will soon be adorned with artwork and landscaping.
“The stadium is one of the most visited places on campus,” PTO President Katie Santiago said.
The main focal point of beautification is around the flagpole near the concession stand, which has fallen into disrepair, she said.
“We also want to show the community what the PTO does is not just for our students and teachers, but for the community and visiting teams as well,” Santiago said.
Wednesday, concrete was poured and once that’s finished, the art class at the Poplarville’s Career and Technology Center will paint a picture of the school’s mascot, the Hornet, Santiago said. Bricks were purchased years ago and those will be placed around the area. Lastly, the group plans to landscape the area, she said.
Although the project was initiated by the PTO, the Booster Club also pitched in, Santiago said.
Poplarville Superintendent Carl Merritt said the PTO is doing a great job of making the stadium look as attractive as possible.
“Their work is highly appreciated,” Merritt said. “The PTO has been so supportive of our district. They are a great asset.”
Last year, the PTO hosted numerous fundraisers including an ice cream sale at the middle school and lower elementary and a raffle of a lawnmower, she said.
“We are planning more activities this year and would like to invite anyone who would like to donate to do so,” Santiago said. “We would also appreciate volunteers. It would be a huge help.”
One of the PTO’s endeavors this year will be teacher scholarships, she said. The award will be based on the greatest need and impact to students and they hope to distribute the scholarships near the end of October. The two winning teachers will be awarded $250 each for their classroom activities, she said.
The PTO will also be in attendance at Friday night’s football game hosting a raffle and membership drive. The game begins at 7 p.m.
Follow the PTO through Facebook at Poplarville PTO for a listing of upcoming events, Santiago said.
The PTO meets the second Tuesday for the month at 5:30 p.m. at Poplarville Middle School.
