Landfill’s hours causes problem for residents

Back in December, the Board of Supervisors announced that Waste Management had informed them that the Central Landfill in McNeill would be closed on Saturdays.

The problem with closing this facility on Saturdays is that it eliminates the only time most working residents can make the trip out to McNeill to dispose of their trash.

According to the Waste Management website, Central Landfill is open Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. While the website states the facility is open on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., for the last few months that has not been the case.

Most working individuals don’t have time to drop off their trash at Central Landfill during the week because they are at work. Which left Saturday as their only opportunity to do the responsible thing and drop off their unwanted items at a legal facility.

Now those residents have had to find another way to get rid of their trash.

While most residents will find other legal alternatives to disposing of their trash, there are some in the county who have been dropping it off on the side of the road or dumping it in an empty field.

Supervisor Sandy Kane Smith has repeatedly complained at the Board of Supervisors meetings about the build up of litter in inappropriate places since the dump began closing on Saturdays.

However, it seems the issue of opening on Saturdays has been resolved, for now. Smith said at Monday’s meeting Waste Management has agreed unofficially to reopen the site on Saturdays.

Let’s just hope it stays open.
