POPLARVILLE — It wasn’t a good week for athletic teams from Pearl River Community College to host arch-rival Jones.
Four days after the top-ranked Jones baseball team came to town and swept a doubleheader, the nationally-ranked and undefeated Jones softball squad repeated the feat here Wednesday.
The Lady Bobcats took the South Division twinbill 7-2 and 11-1, moving to an impressive 24-0 overall as well as 10-0 in league play.
The Lady Wildcats drop to 13-9 overall and 7-3 in the loop.
The victorious Lady Bobcats scored five runs in the top of the fourth to pick up the win in the first game before exploding for a combined 10 runs in the fourth and fifth frames in the nightcap to take the lopsided decision in five innings via the 10-run rule.
In the opening contest, things were scoreless in the first, but the host Lady Wildcats went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Emily Jackson out of Theodore (Ala.) High and Kaci Lantrip of Terry High led off with singles, pulled off a double steal, and Jackson scored off a sacrifice an out later by Hannah Holloway of Petal High.
In the top of the fourth, Bailey Stokes led off with a single and courtesy runner Lindy Tabor moved to second off Karla Santiago’s sac bunt, setting the stage for Savannah Lyon’s RBI double to tie it up at 1-1. After C.C. Lawn walked and Kimberly Nilsson singled, Tori Dew smacked a two-run double to take the lead for good. Lauren Holifield followed with an RBI single, while Brittany Seale’s sacrifice scored a fifth run to make it 5-1.
Jones added a run in the sixth, and PRCC scored its final run in the seventh when Allie Flint of Madison Central High led off with a walk and Megan Scronce of Petal High doubled. Two outs later, Flint scored off Rachel Hickman’s single to left before Jackson was retired to end the game.
Jones starter Samantha Buller (13-0) picked up the win in going the distance, giving up eight hits and walking three, while Hickman out of Poplarville High (7-4) got the loss. She also pitched the distance, giving up eight hits and walking eight.
Scronce paced PRCC with a double and a single (one RBI).
In the nightcap, things were scoreless for the first two innings before the Lady Bobcats pushed a solo run home in the third, they exploded for seven in the fourth and three in the fifth to make it 11-0. The River managed a run in the bottom of the fifth and the game ended via the 10-run rule. Starter Holifield (13-0) got the win, while PRCC starter Ashley Hawkins of Theodore (Ala.) High (4-4) took the loss.
Lantrip had two singles for PRCC and Holloway a base hit (one RBI).
Pearl River and Jones County eye a South Division rematch Friday, April 11 (4 p.m. doubleheader) in Ellisville.
The Lady Wildcats return to action Saturday when they host MACJC South Division rival Copiah-Lincoln for its annual Cancer Awareness doubleheader starting at 12 noon (Purple Games) before traveling to division foe East Central Tuesday for a 3 p.m. twin bill.
