The Mississippi Office of Homeland Security has received a $100 million grant for a communications system.

The money will go toward improving the state’s emergency communication, particularly during natural disasters and acts of terrorism.

J.W. Ledbetter, executive director of the state Homeland Security office, said currently emergency responders can only communicate by wireless devices from the coast to Jackson. He said once the new infrastructure is in place, responders statewide will be able to talk to each other.

He said tower sites, antennas, microwave links and other infrastructure will be purchased.
