Bay St. Louis Police Chief Tom Burleson says the department plans to buy 30 stun guns for $36,884 in drug forfeiture funds.
He says most of the stun guns will be equipped with a video monitor which is used every time the device is fired.
The Sea Coast Echo in Bay St. Louis reported that Burleson told the council this week that officers will attend training courses. Burleson says officers will be shot with one of the guns before they can carry one so they can know how it feels.
Council members suggested an independent party to review all instances when the stun guns are used. They say they don’t want officers using the guns without some checks and balances.
Mayor Les Fillingame says there will be accountability.
