Management oversight of the Mississippi long-term recovery office set up after Hurricane Katrina will transfer from Biloxi to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s regional office in Atlanta.
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says the move signals the state’s progress.
The decision comes after Napolitano visited the Gulf Coast earlier this month to tour areas devastated by Katrina.
Disaster management is usually handled out of a regional office, but after Katrina, recovery offices were set up in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Alabama. Only Louisiana’s office remains.
