Mississippi first lady Marsha Barbour is recovering from surgery to remove an enlarged thyroid gland.
Gov. Haley Barbour disclosed his wife’s surgery during a speech Thursday at the Neshoba County Fair. He said the procedure was performed Monday at Baptist Medical Center in Jackson, where his wife is recovering.
Barbour said the first lady had developed a progressively enlarging multiple lumps within an enlarged thyroid gland over the past few years.
He said removal of the gland was considered the best strategy from a long-term perspective.
Barbour said biopsies indicate his wife’s thyroid was cancer free.
