The Picayune Police Department and Pearl River County SPCA volunteer Rhonda Furby teamed up to get an injured sharp-shinned hawk to a wildlife rehabilitator in Vancleave, Miss.

“On Jan 3 at 4:02 p.m. we were dispatched to an address on Audubon Drive in reference to an injured hawk in someone’s yard,” said Jeremy Magri, assistant to the chief.

“Upon arrival, the officer observed a sharp-shinned hawk with an apparent left wing injury as it hung lower to the ground than the right wing,” Magri said.

“At which time they contacted SPCA and spoke with Furby, who responded to scene with a carrier to transport the injured hawk. Using a moving blanket to guide the hawk they were able to maneuver it into the carrier without further injury,” he said

Once inside the carrier, the hawk appeared relaxed and was transported to a rehabilitator by Furby, Magri said.

Upon follow-up with Furby at the SPCA, she said that the hawk was transported to a wildlife rehabilitator in Vancleave, who she was referred to by the Wildlife and Fisheries Department. The procedure is to release it into the wild upon successful rehabilitation, Furby said.
