Local teams eye postseason spots

MOSS POINT — Visiting Poplarville was the final team with a chance to hand league-leading Moss Point a loss in Region 8-4A play, but the Hornets came up short in that quest Friday night.

The homestanding Tigers wrapped up district action with an 81-48 win at Arthur Haynes Gymnasium over Poplarville, moving to 14-13 overall and finishing 10-0 in district play. Kentucky signee Devin Booker scored 41 points on Senior Night for Moss Point, which has won 10 of 12 since Jan. 1 following a 3-11 start.

Anthony Martin scored 17 points to lead the way for Poplarville, which fell to 14-10 overall and 3-6 in league play.

Moss Point carries the No. 1 seed into the division tournament, which takes place next week at Bay High.

In the girls game, Moss Point ran away with a 74-27 victory.

Rozeanna Young scored 20 points to lead the way for Moss Point (8-17, 7-3 in Division 8-4A). Mary Millender added 12 and Dominique Barlow 10.

Shaneisha Huderson scored 10 points to lead Poplarville.

Both Poplarville teams wrapped up league play on the road Monday night at Pass Christian. A full report on those games will appear in Wednesday’s issue of the Picayune Item.

Also, both Poplarville squads wrap up regular season play at North Forrest tonight.

Elsewhere on Friday night, homestanding Picayune split a pair of games with Bay High.

The Maroon Tide came away with an exciting 44-41 win over the Tigers.

Picayune trailed 22-21 at the half, but went on a 13-4 run to start the third quarter and held on for the win.

Shemar Williams had 19 points and nine rebounds to pace Picayune, while Donovan Rice added 13 points five assists and three steals. Hakeem Magee chipped in nine points and eight rebounds to the winning effort.

In the girls game, Bay High took a 65-39 win.

Tyesha Smith and Ashley Bridges each scored eight points apiece for Picayune.

Christa Reed scored 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the defending Class 4A state champion Lady Tigers, which moved to 22-3 on the season. Breanna Smith had 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Jamaya Galloway had 13 points and nine assists.

Also, both Pearl River Central squads wrapped up Region 5-5A play with losses on the road at Brookhaven Friday night.

The Blue Devils fell 69-43 to the Panthers. Alex Travis tallied a game high 20 points for PRC, while Fred Trevillion paced Brookhaven with 17 points.

Trevillion was also the quarterback for the Panthers football team, and just signed a scholarship with San Diego State University.

The Lady Devils fell 50-14. Both PRC teams finished 0-6 in league play.

Both PRC teams play at Vancleave tonight, and then finish up regular season play by hosting arch-rival Picayune Friday night.
