Poplarville girls fall to the Lady Hurricanes

Poplarville’s girls opened the Picayune Holiday Tournament against West Harrison Friday afternoon at Kelly Wise Gym.

The Lady Hurricanes blew the Lady Hornets away.

West Harrison jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead less than four minutes into the game, and never looked back in taking a commanding 58-13 lead over Poplarville.

The game was the first of four in the annual event. Four more games will be played today.

The Lady Hurricanes used a decided height advantage over the Lady Hornets and never allowed Poplarville to get into any type of rotation offensively.

West Harrison led 16-0 before Poplarville finally got on the scoreboard on a lay-up by Zanisha Turner.

Leading 18-2 after the first period, West Harrison’s 6-foot-4 center Ameisha Williams stuck in a putback to open the second quarter and make it 20-2. That began a 15-2 spurt to open the stanza that ultimately left the Lady Hurricanes with a 33-2 advantage with five minutes to play before halftime.

Maryah Davis scored six points to lead all Poplarville scorers, while Willims had a game high 18 for West Harrison.

The Lady Hornets will play again today at 1p.m., against either Picayune or Ocean Springs.

The Lady Tide and Lady Greyhounds met Friday night, as did the Picayune boys and the Ocean Springs boys.

In another game on Friday afternoon, the West Harrison boys remained unbeaten with a 71-40 win over St. Stanislaus.

Harvey Smart and Maurice Stephens combined for 22 points in the first half as the Hurricanes took a 35-15 lead into intermission over the Rockachaws.
