Wildcats remain unbeaten so far

POPLARVILLE — The Pearl River Community College baseball team is currently in the midst of a big four game road trip to Tennessee.

Before hitting the road however, the Wildcats made sure they would make the trip with a perfect record.

PRCC remained unbeaten, as the Wildcats swept MACJC non-division rival Mississippi Delta 5-3 and 9-1 in a doubleheader on Friday.

The Wildcats improved to 6-0 overall, while MDCC evened its record to 2-2.

In the first game, the River jumped out to an early 4-0 lead scoring two runs in both the first and second frames, then added a solo run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Delta scored its only run of the contest in the top of the sixth.

Starter Jake Brumfield out of Adams Christian Academy in Natchez (2-0) got the win in his six innings on the mound, giving up three hits, striking out four, and walking three. Trevor Bennett of Hancock County High saw one inning of relief duty, striking out three, while Colton Lee of Pearl River Central High pitched two frames.

Starter Paul Carpenter (0-1) got the loss in just over an inning of action, giving up eight hits and striking out one.

Demarcus Moore and Danny Springs both doubled to lead the Trojans’ six-hit effort.

Kyle Dolan of Forrest County AHS paced the Wildcats’ 16-hit attack with three singles, while Tracy Hadley of Pascagoula High smacked two doubles and a single (one RBI). Kreg Garner of Northwest Rankin High doubled and singled, Lamar Anthony of Pascagoula High, Darien Brown of Hattiesburg High (two RBIs), and Derrick Mount of Harrison Central High (one RBI), all had two base hits apiece, and Jalen Haskin of Oak Grove High (one RBI) and Jacob Taylor of Picayune High (one RBI) both singled.

In the second game, it was all Pearl River, as the Wildcats scored one in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the third and sixth frames to take the five-run shutout.

Starter Luke McGee (2-0), an Ohio State transfer out of Wooster (Ohio) High got the win in his six innings on the mound, giving up three hits, striking out two, and walking three. Allen Cowart of Pascagoula High closed it out in the seventh, giving up two hits.

Starter Devontae Wilson (0-1) go the loss.

Nathan Pugh of Starkville High led the Wildcats’ six-hit effort with a double and a single (one RBI). Mount had two base hits, Derek Martin of Poplarville High tripled (two RBIs), and Anthony singled (one RBI). Deanzel Johnson out of Lanier High in Jackson also had an RBI for the Wildcats.

PRCC is on the road at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn., for a pair of games both Monday and today. On Monday, PRCC faced Wabash Valley (Ind.) before taking on Iowa Lakes (Iowa). Today, the Wildcats take on Southwest Tennessee at 11 a.m., then Ellsworth (Iowa) at 1:30 p.m.
