Three arrests made over the span of several days led to the removal of heroin and methamphetamine from the streets of Picayune.

Picayune Assistant Chief of Police Jeremy Magri said that on April 27, at about 11 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle at the intersection of South Beech Street and Bender Street for traveling 38 mph in a 20 mph school zone. When the officer spoke to the driver, identified as Derek Jarrell, 36, 11 Fritz Whitfield Rd., Picayune, he noticed Jarrell seemed extremely nervous, Magri said. Jarrell was constantly moving around the inside of the vehicle and at one point seemed to reach under the seat toward the floorboard. At this point the officer asked Jarrell to exit the vehicle. Magri said Jarrell was unable to provide a driver’s license or proof of insurance. After checking the NCIC database, the officer found Jarrell’s license had been cancelled.

Magri said a second officer was called to the scene and spoke with Jarrell’s passenger, identified as Justin Deloach, 30, Sealcrest Drive, Picayune. Deloach also displayed nervous behavior and was subsequently asked to exit the vehicle.

After both men were out of the vehicle, Magri said the officers received consent to search the vehicle. During the search, they found a syringe on the floor in-between two bench seats. They also discovered a wad of aluminum foil, which contained a brown powdery substance believed to be heroin.

Jarrell and Deloach were both arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia. Jarrell was additionally issued three citations for speeding in a school zone, no insurance, and driving without a license.

A few days later, at about 5 a.m. on May 1, officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 11 near Laird Street for driving with only one headlight, Magri said. Officers approached the vehicle and spoke to the driver, who complied with requests for proper identification. When the passenger, identified as Colby Brown, 30, 83 Bass Rd., Carriere, was asked for identification, she told the officers that she was worried that she had a warrant for missing a court date.

Magri said officers conducted a local warrants check and discovered that Brown was wanted by the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department for an outstanding warrant. Brown was arrested and taken to the Criminal Justice Center where a female officer conducted a search of Brown’s person and discovered two bags of a substance believed to be methamphetamine on Brown’s person, Magri said.

Brown was arrested for the warrant and for felony possession of a controlled substance, Magri said.
