Only two weeks after two arrests were made in regards to threats made at local schools, the Pearl River County School District received a report on Thursday that another student had made a threat via social media, leading to an investigation into the validity of the report.
Superintendent Alan Lumpkin said a student who reported it saw the threat on social media and reported it to the campus police and the school’s administration. The student who allegedly made the threat was immediately brought in for questioning and faculty informed investigators with the Pearl River Sheriff’s Department about the situation, Lumpkin said.
The Sheriff’s Department took the student into custody to check into the matter, and later determined the threat was non-viable, Lumpkin said.
Lumpkin said that whether a threat is deemed viable or not, any student who makes any type of threat against students, staff or the District will be disciplined. According to District policy, any student who makes a threat will be suspended and undergo a disciplinary hearing. Lumpkin said that the student in question will be disciplined, but did not specify how.
School administration released a statement on the school’s social media page urging parents and students to take threats seriously.
“Please take time to speak with your child about the seriousness of making threats to harm others or to bring guns to our school campuses. This is not a joking matter and all threats will be investigated, will be disciplined to the fullest extent of school board policy and will be prosecuted by the local authorities,” the release stated.
