A last ditch effort by the Lady Devils to send Tuesday’s game against Jaskon’s Wingfield into overtime was blocked at the buzzer.

Just before the shot, the Lady Devils were down by two points and had only four seconds left in the game.

In that final attempt to keep the game alive, a Lady Devils player stole the inbound pass from Wingfield and shot the ball one last time in an attempt to tie the game.

Wingfield blocked the shot, securing a victory against Pearl River Central Monday night at the buzzer 46-44, PRC Head Coach Tony LaBella said. 

As soon as Wingfield blocked the shot by PRC (17-13), the game clock hit double zeros, giving the Lady Falcons (6-17) a first round victory in the Class 5A state tournament and ending the Lady Devils’ season.

“Like always, the girls gave a good effort but it’s a disappointing ending to the season,” Head Coach Tony LaBella said.

“We had played well against Picayune in our previous game and we were hoping the momentum from that game would carry over, but unfortunately we came up short at the end.”

Despite trailing 9-7 after the first quarter, the Lady Devils scored 12 points in the second quarter to take a temporary 19-17 lead.

LaBella said PRC led 23-17 halfway through the third quarter but the Lady Falcons were able to get good looks at the basket afterwards and took a 32-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the last quarter of the game, the Lady Devils were able to find their groove offensively as they cut the deficit to only one-point on multiple occasions.

With less than a minute to go, Brooklyn Howe gave PRC a 42-41 lead after shooting two successful free throws.

Wingfield outscored the Lady Devils 5-2 in the final seconds of the game.

With the win, the Wingfield will face West Jones in the second round of the Class 5A state tournament.

Harlee Davis finished the game with 14 points, Howe and Lakyn Spence had seven points each and Samantha Orgeron scored six.

Also, Lindsey McCurdy and Breyanna Bernard scored four points and Madison Gower finished with two, Labella said.

Heading into the offseason, the Lady Devils will lose Howe, Spence, Gower and Lindsay Kyle due to graduation.

“This is a tough senior class to lose because all of them contributed on and off the court and they helped everyone improve as the season went along,” LaBella said. “Besides being basketball players, they’re also good kids, they’re good role models and it won’t be the same without them next season.”
