Local law enforcement officers encourage everyone to have an enjoyable and safe time at area Mardi Gras parades by employing safe practices.
Poplarville Police Chief Butch Raby said cars should be parked in a safe area that is well lit and not isolated.
“It is important to park cars in a safe area to avoid having anyone break into the car. Keep windows up, valuables out of sight and the car locked at all times,” Raby said.
He said parade goers should remain vigilant during and after the parade as well.
During the parade, attendees need to be attentive and mindful of everything taking place around them.
“We want everyone to have fun but at the same time be cautious and stay safe,” Raby said.
He said those marching or driving in the parade should keep a safe distance from floats and parents should keep children away from floats to avoid injuries.
Pearl River County Sheriff David Allison said it is advisable to avoid consuming alcohol during parades. However, if alcohol is consumed assign a designated driver.
If something serious does occur, Allison said it must be reported immediately.
“I’ve observed that people get into fights under the influence of alcohol and sometimes things get out of hand. In this case it would be wise to dial 911 and report the incident and if you’re close to the situation back away from it and watch from a safe distance,” Allison said.
Saturday’s parade in Picayune starts at 2 p.m. from Crosby Commons along Goodyear Boulevard e.
