A vehicle chase between a Poplarville resident and the Pearl River County Sherriff’s Department ended when the vehicle crashed into a house.
It all started about 2:15 p.m. on Jan. 29 when the Sheriff’s Department received a call from a resident who lives on American Sand and Gravel Road in Poplarville who said there was a man in a truck outside their house threatening to kill him with a shotgun, Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said.
When deputies arrived to the scene, the individual with the shotgun, later identified as 35-year-old Eric Donston of 267 Peters Rd., Poplarville, got inside the truck and fled the area leading to a pursuit by the deputies, Tucker said.
Before Donston reached Highway 26, one of the deputies deployed a set of spike strips that flattened both front tires on Donston’s truck, Tucker said.
Despite both front tires disintegrating, Donston continued westbound on Highway 26 towards Poplarville. After driving the truck recklessly and on two rims down Highway 26, Donston entered a residential area. Donston lost control of the truck and crashed into a house at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and South Jordan Street, Tucker said.
After the truck crashed into the residence, Donston got out of the truck and fled on foot towards a wooded area in the back of a house, Tucker said. Moments later, Donston was captured by pursuing deputies, but he continued to resist arrest. After a minute or so, deputies were able to get him into custody, Tucker said.
When deputies approached the truck, they found a female sitting on the passenger seat, later identified as Charmaine Wheat, 46, of 13952 Peters Bend Rd., Bogalusa, La. and conducted a search. During that search they found, methamphetamine and paraphernalia in the vehicle. Continued investigation determined that Wheat assisted Donston during the chase, Tucker said.
Wheat was arrested for possession of paraphernalia, hindering prosecution and possession of a controlled substance, Tucker said.
Donston was charged with five counts of possession of a stolen firearm, five counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia, retaliation against a public servant and a felony probation violation with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Tucker said Donston was arrested for five counts of possession of stolen firearms due to a warrant the department had on him prior to the incident.
This was not the first time Donston has run from law enforcement. Tucker said that during the winter storm on Jan. 19, one of the department’s investigators saw Donston in Poplarville and pursued after him due to that stolen firearm warrant, but due to the winter weather, the pursuit was called off to ensure the safety of the community and the deputy.
The damaged the house sustained during the Jan. 29 chase the was severe, but the truck did not enter the house and no one was injured, Tucker said.
