A high-speed chase along Highway 11 ended in a Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department deputy firing a shot at the driver of the vehicle.

Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said the incident occurred Monday night just after 9:45 when the deputy attempted to conduct a stop on a speeding vehicle that was north bound on Highway 11 near Burgetown Road.

The vehicle spun around heading southbound at that time and attempted to elude the deputy at speeds of at least 100 miles per hour, Tucker said.

At the intersection of Richardson Ozona Road and Richardson Road, the suspect vehicle spun out. Tucker said that was when the pursuit ended, the officer discharged his weapon and the driver of the vehicle, identified as 25-year-old Joshua Frierson of Beech Road in Poplarville, sustained a non-life-threatening injury.

Frierson was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his wound, and once he’s released will be arrested for reckless driving, failure to yield to blue lights, resisting arrest by fleeing and disorderly conduct failure to comply, Tucker said.

The Chief Deputy said that a female passenger in the vehicle was unharmed during the incident and released at the scene.

Tucker declined to name the deputy involved in the incident or state whether the driver of the vehicle had a gun on him at he time to of the incident, citing the fact that the case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations.

“We are confident our deputy acted appropriately,” Tucker said.
