As New Year approaches some Pearl River County families will opt to create their own festive fireworks display.
While it’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, the Poplarville Fire Department offers firework safety tips for those handling fireworks during the holiday.
Although residents of Pearl River County and Poplarville haven’t experienced fireworks related incidents in the recent past, Poplarville Fire Chief Jonathan Head said residents should still practice safe handling techniques in order to enjoy their fireworks.
Head said it’s important when handling fireworks to use them as instructed on the packaging. He also advised everyone to not modify fireworks in any way.
Children will want to light their own fireworks, so Head strongly suggests a parent or guardian assists them at all times. He also said that children should only be allowed to use fireworks that are appropriate for their age.
Head said it is advised to be aware of the surroundings when setting off sparklers or any other firework that emits sparks, heat or light. He recommends lighting sparklers only in clear areas free of people or animals.
Another precautionary measure involves using fireworks in empty and open areas away from structures and vehicles.
“We want to put the message across that operate all fireworks safely and follow the general safety guidelines to make the most and enjoy the holidays,” Head said.
It’s also a good idea to have a charged water hose, fire extinguisher and a bucket of water nearby.
