Troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol worked several accidents and DUI’s over the Thanksgiving weekend statewide. All available troopers were on duty conducting patrols and safety checkpoints during the enforcement period.   

Throughout November 22-26, troopers issued 4,698 citations statewide, 185 of them were written in Pearl River County, said MHP Troop K Public Affairs Officer Chase Elkins.

Troop K, includes Harrison, Jackson, George, Hancock, Stone and Pearl River counties.

One fatality was reported in Stone County on Nov. 26, which claimed the life of one woman.

At the time of the accident, 50-year-old Judy Annette Pounds was travelling westbound on MS 26, when she lost control of her vehicle, causing the car to roll over, ejecting her. Pounds was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. 

According to an MHP release, Pounds, of Moss Point, was transported to Stone County Hospital where she was pronounced due to injuries she sustained during the crash. Her 55-year-old passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, suffered only minor injuries, the release states.

No fatalities as the result of vehicular accidents in Pearl River County were reported to MHP, said Elkins however there were four automobile crashes in the county, one of which involved two injuries.

Overall, 163 accidents occurred during that period in Mississippi, nine were reported to be alcohol related, according to the release from MHP.

Two DUI arrests were performed by troopers in Pearl River County during the Thanksgiving enforcement period while statewide 46 DUI’s were worked by troopers, the release states.

Two drug arrests conducted by troopers within Troop K, but none were in Pearl River County. Ten total drug arrests were performed by troopers statewide.
