The Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a Veterans Day celebration event at 2500 Union School Road in Picayune on Nov. 11.
The Veterans Day celebration will begin at 10 a.m. with a memorial and prayer for any veteran.
The event will include a luncheon, which will begin around 11 a.m. and feature guest speakers.
The guest speakers will include veterans who have served in the armed forces and will share their memories and experience with the audience.
Al Stillman, a Picayune resident, built and donated a swing set to the American Legion Post, which will be raffled off during the celebration event.
“Veterans can register for a raffle ticket and have an opportunity to win this beautiful swing set,” American Legion first vice commander of the Riders Luis Pecon said.
The American Legion Riders is a non-profit group that was established seven months ago. The goal of the club is to help other veterans in the community using the money collected through fundraisers.
“We have a program called ‘Patriot Card Riders,’ where we hold a ceremony for any veteran that passes away,” Pecon said. “We are looking for more members and for more people to help us out.”
The American Legion Riders will hold a meet-and-greet at the Street Festival on Nov. 4, in Picayune, due in part to a donation by the Greater Picayune Area Chamber of Commerce.
“We invite everyone to come out and meet other members of the American Legion Riders,” Pecon said. “Our goal is to meet as many people as possible and to get the word out about our Veterans Day celebration.”
Pecon said he will also have a spot set up at the Picayune Farmers Market at Goodyear Baptist Church, where he will sell crafts in order to cover the expenses for the veterans celebration.
“We held this event last year and we had a good time and I’m hoping for the same success this year,” Pecon said.
