For a team that hasn’t allowed any points so far this season, the Seminary Bulldogs met a tougher opponent when it faced the Poplarville Hornets Friday night. Poplarville celebrated their third win of the season, ending in a score of 48-0, with confetti on the field.
Poplarville had a number of key players that led the team to victory, including Roosevelt Raine, Austin Bolton, Antonio Barnes, Tyson Holston and Cory Knight.
“They had outstanding defensive front, they hadn’t allowed a touchdown all year so we were very concerned how we would handle them,” Poplarville Head Coach Jay Beech said about the Bulldogs.
But teamwork and a desire to win proved key in Friday’s game, as the Hornets worked together to move the ball down field and quickly regain possession when the opponent held it.
Poplarville’s Caziah Daniels intercepted a pass at the Bulldog’s 35-yard line in the first quarter after a quick two-play possession by the Bulldogs. That allowed Bolton to rush in from the 9-yard line and make it to the end zone for the third time.
Hornet Mario Barnes recovered the ball for Poplarville at the Bulldog’s 40 yard line in the third quarter later allowing Raine to carry in his first touchdown.
Poplarville’s Chase Shears almost ran one in during the third, but a flag pushed the Hornets back to the 46-yard line. Raine bounced the team back, running in his second touchdown of the game.
Cole Hooper recovered a fumble in the fourth, allowing Knight to run in one last touchdown, for the final score of 47-0.
“Our guys just played great technique and great effort, we prepare every day for the best,” Beech said. “We prepare to block the best defensive linemen in the state and tonight we got our chance and we played well.”
The Hornets (3-0) head to Stone County (2-0) next Friday.
