The Poplarville Board of Aldermen approved several items that rolled over from the previous administration during Tuesday’s meeting.
To start, the Board voted to appoint Kolby Davis as code enforcement officer and building inspector for the city. Davis also volunteered to conduct all mechanical, electrical and plumbing inspections as part of his building inspector duties.
In response to questions about whether working for the city would conflict with his code enforcement duties with Pearl River County, Davis said he will perform all of his work for the city after his normal work hours and on weekends. In the event of an emergency, Davis said he could use leave time with the county in order to respond to the city’s needs.
An additional requirement of his hiring was that Davis will not be allowed to use devices or equipment provided by the county while conducting city business.
After Mayor Rossie Creel welcomed him to the city, Davis got to work immediately, addressing five properties that have received complaints. Davis said he will be sending courtesy letters focused on the need to clean the following properties: a vacant house and overgrown property on Roy Street, a vacant and burned home at 818 S. Julia St., a vacant and overgrown property at 207 Memosa St., a vacant and overgrown property at 205 Sweet Gum St. and a vacant and overgrown property at 110 Maple St.
In other matters, the Board partially approved payment of an invoice from the Poplarville-Pearl River County Airport. City Clerk Jane O’Neal said the city agreed to pay $5,690 for a fencing project at the airport. The city has already paid $3,735, O’Neal said, but the invoice was for an additional $4,459.
The Board voted to pay the new invoice only so far as to reach the cap originally budgeted.
In other matters, the Board:
— Tabled the appointment of another election commissioner.
— Approved the addition of two new volunteer firefighters.
