Just as the Blueberry Jubilee began, members of the Poplarville Fire Department were seen leaving Main Street in haste to respond to a structure fire.
The fire occurred at 121 Azalea Street at 8:12 a.m. Saturday, Poplarville Fire Chief Jonathan Head said.
The fire started in the kitchen as the result of a cooking accident, he said.
Within 10 minutes of arriving on scene, the flames were extinguished by firefighters, Head said.
The kitchen sustained heavy damage but the fire was contained to that room, he said.
No one was injured during the incident; both occupants were able to exit the home unharmed, Head said.
“This is our first structure fire in a while, thank goodness,” he said. “I’m just glad our guys were able to respond with quick action to limit the amount of damage.”
