Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant set a date for a special election to fill the vacant state House of Representatives District 108 seat.
The seat was vacated last month after Mark Formby was nominated by Bryant to serve on the Worker’s Compensation Commission, previous coverage states.
Formby filled that seat for 24 years, according to previous coverage.
The election to find his replacement will be held July 25, according to a press release from the governor’s office.
The deadline for candidates to qualify is June 5.
Qualifying forms for candidates can be found at the Mississippi Secretary of State’s website, www.sos.ms.gov.
If necessary, a runoff election will be held August 15, the release states.
This is the second special election held in Pearl River County this fiscal year, after Herb Frierson vacated his seat in District 106 to service as the Commissioner of the Department of Revenue.
Pearl River County Circuit Clerk Nance Stokes previously said the cost of these elections is estimated to be about $14,000, and that it’s unclear if the extra expense is included in the year’s budget.
In order to vote in the election, residents must register at least 30 days prior to the election.
Anyone who does not vote in the primary can still vote in the runoff election.
Candidates do not run on party platforms during special elections.
