A brief meeting of the Picayune City Council Tuesday night covered a handful of topics.
Police Chief Bryan Dawsey presented a request to the Council to accept the donation of safety equipment totaling $7,182. After the Council approved a motion to accept the donation, Dawsey said the donation equated to the difference of the funds raised during the Saving Police Lives Campaign. The rest, totaling about $11,000, was used to purchase new vests for every officer in the department.
In another matter, Councilor Tammy Valente asked about the lack of property cleanup requests on recent agendas for the Council, wondering if that was a good sign. City Manager Jim Luke said it was a reflection of less property needing to be cleaned.
Mayor Ed Pinero Jr., reminded those in attendance that the National Day of Prayer is Thursday, and that morning from 8 to 9 the city will hold a Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast at the Link on Goodyear Boulevard, featuring the Pearl River Community College Choir and a number of local pastors. The public is invited.
City resident Ralph Rowell asked the Council why the nearest polling place for his precinct was almost in Nicholson, requesting that one be established on the north side of the Hobolochitto Creek to reduce the drive time, especially for elderly citizens. Pinero and Luke agreed that city officials should look into the matter.
The next meeting will be May 16 at 5 p.m. in City Hall.
