A Carriere man was arrested by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department for the third time in two months in relation to driving under the influence.
Desmond Coogan, 59, was arrested by deputies at the scene of a three-vehicle accident on Highway 90 near Lakeshore Road in Bay St. Louis for DUI causing injury, Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam said.
Deputies believe Coogan was crossing Highway 90 on Lakeshore Road when he turned eastbound into the westbound lane, colliding with two vehicles at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, Adam said.
The occupants of those vehicles were transported to the South Alabama University Medical Center in Mobile and were last listed as being in serious condition, Adam said.
Coogan’s recent history with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department includes several alcohol-related incidents.
In mid-March, he was arrested by the department on Lakeshore Road for a DUI, Adam said.
When he showed up for court Tuesday in relation to that arrest, Coogan was allegedly drunk and was arrested again, but released on an indigent bond signed by Judge Tommy Carver, Adam said.
Adam said Coogan appears to spend time in Hancock County at a fishing camp in Lafrancis owned by the family.
He is currently being held at the Hancock County jail on a $50,000 cash bond, Adam said
Further charges could be pressed against Coogan should the condition of the victims change for the worse, he said. The Mississippi Highway Patrol has taken over the investigation.
