Last week, Phillips Building Supply in Picayune raffled off a hand-built 8×12 storage building, raising $2,000 to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The winners, Connice and Joe Cobb, both retired educators, said they were happy to have helped an organization that helps so many children.
Phillips Building Supply of Picayune Manager Jerry Matthews said the storage building was built by Aubrey Kellar with materials donated by the business. Kellar said it took about two days to construct the storage building, with some help from Phillips Building Supply staff.
Originally, it was used in the Civic Woman’s Club annual Christmas parade. But after the parade was over, the Matthews said he didn’t have a use for the building so he and other Phillips Building Supply representatives thought raffling it off to raise funds for the hospital would be a great idea.
The prize was awarded on April 1.
Matthews said the idea worked so well it will now be an annual effort. The plan for the next raffle will be to have Kellar and volunteers build a gazebo.
Details of the next raffle are still being worked out. But when that effort begins, Matthew said he would accept any assistance offered by members of the community.
