Under the umbrella of the Poplarville Area Chamber of Commerce, the new Poplarville Farmers Market drew community members to the city’s town green during the opening event Thursday afternoon.
“This is a fabulous start,” April Grecho, one of the event organizers said.
Over 100 people were welcomed with free scoops of Bluebell ice cream before they visited the 12 booths spread across the town green in the first hour of the event.
Vendors brought items including eggs, spring vegetables and fruits and homemade pralines to name a few.
The variety of foods and booths is expected to vary with each event, Grecho said.
“We’re still growing,” she said.
Most of the vendors operate within Pearl River County, making the event an easy place for them to sell some of their goods.
Local restaurants, including Scooters, Deb’s Pizza and Eclectic Café, also provided attendees with something to eat while they shopped.
The opening event also included live entertainment from Raeana Creel and CrossTies as well as a rock-climbing wall for the kids.
Surrounding shops along Main Street stayed open late in support of the event as well, offering an escape from the heat and restrooms for guests.
The market will continue to be held on the first and third Thursday of every month from 3 to 6 p.m. at the town green.
“Each week there will be a little bit more so keep coming back,” Grecho said.
