Two people were arrested on Wednesday in relation to a two-vehicle accident. The accident occurred on Oct. 19 at the intersection of Highway 43 North and Highland Parkway.
Picayune Police Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said the accident occurred at approximately 12:46 p.m., as a red Toyota Tundra, driven by Oliver Lee, 45, of Picayune, failed to yield to oncoming traffic as he turned toward Highland Parkway, entering the path of a white Chevrolet Cruz travelling west on Highway 43 North. The two cars collided at the intersection.
Upon arrival to the scene, an officer spoke with Lee and his passenger Terry Smith, 56, of Picayune. At that time, the officer observed two open alcoholic beverages in the vehicle, Magri said.
After further inspection, the officer discovered Lee did not have proof of insurance, his license was suspended and his tag was expired, Magri said.
Although Lee did not appear to be intoxicated, while speaking with Smith, Magri said the officer could smell alcohol on his person and noticed Smith had slurred speech and blood shot eyes.
Both Lee and Smith were taken into custody and were transported to the Criminal Justice Center where they were booked.
Lee was charged with possession of an open beer, driving with a suspended license, no proof of insurance and an expired tag.
Smith was charged with public drunk and possession of an open beer.
No serious injuries were reported as a result of the accident.
