The Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a three-vehicle accident in Picayune on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
The accident occurred as a 2015 Ford Flex heading east attempted to cross all lanes of traffic on Highway 11 into the path of a Picayune Police Department patrol vehicle, MHP Public Affairs Officer Chase Elkins said in an emailed statement.
Picayune Police Department Officer Chase Richardson was traveling north in the right lane of Highway 11 when his patrol vehicle struck the passenger side of the Ford, Elkins said.
The impact forced the Ford into a stationary 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Elkins said.
The driver of the Ford Flex was later identified as Phillip Sublett, 27, of 3231 E. 35th Ave., Lake Station, Indiana. Sublett was issued two citations for failing to yield right of way and driving with a suspended license, Elkins said.
The driver of the Chevrolet was later identified as Charles Slater, 45, of 19 Dunn Road, Poplarville. Slater was not charged.
Richardson and Sublett were transported to Highland Community Hospital and treated for minor injuries, Elkins said.
The Picayune Police vehicle sustained heavy damage. The extent of necessary repairs is uncertain at this time, Picayune Police Department Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said.
Magri said Richardson was responding to a non-emergency domestic call at the time of the accident, so emergency lights and sirens were not being used.
