He was a proud veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific. He was retired from the construction industry. Henry was highly spoken of by his coworkers as being such a hard worker. He dearly loved children and was fondly known as the “Sweet Tart Man”. He always carried Sweet Tarts in his pocket for children. Henry was a member of Cedar Grove Landmark Missionary Baptist Church. Because of his love for children, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or the Baptist Children’s Village.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jefferson Thigpen and Cynthia Ellen Dean Thigpen; his sisters, Oscar Holden, Mary Katherine Necaise, Dorothy Jordan, and Susie Conley; his son-in-law, Larry Preston; and his grandson, Nathan Preston.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 69 years, Joyce Burgess Thigpen; his children, Christina (Roger) Whitney, Henry Ray (Jeanette) Thigpen, Ruth Preston, and Melinda Kay (Leland) Kendrick; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; his sisters, Alma McArthur and Nora Hinton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
