Saturday, residents from Pearl River County and surrounding areas are invited to attend the 20th annual Senior Citizen’s Fair and Expo.
The annual event is more than just a health fair, WRJW Radio’s General Manager Dolores Wood said.
“Any way to make a senior’s life easier, we try to include it for them,” she said. “We try to cover everything from healthcare to volunteer opportunities to entertainment.”
This year’s fair and expo will feature more than 80 booths, she said.
There will be at least eight health screening opportunities including those for hearing, sight, spinal, blood pressure, blood sugar and glucose levels. Representatives from area hospitals and healthcare providers will be in attendance to inform seniors about their medical options.
Representatives from the Mississippi Insurance Department will be able to assist seniors finding any type of insurance they desire, Wood said.
Representatives from city, county and state departments and the Greater Picayune Area Chamber of Commerce will also be in attendance to speak to attendees, Wood said.
Other booths represented include the Mississippi State University Extension Office, Crosby Arboretum, New Orleans World War II Museum, the John C. Stennis NASA Space Center, the Senior Center of South Pearl River County and the Pearl River County Library System.
Booths will also have information on basic computer skills and how to properly use pepper spray.
Representatives from Senior Medicare Patrol will explain the warning signs pertaining to Medicare fraud.
Some seniors don’t realize that some doctors send incorrect claims to Medicare, usually in the form of overcharges, Wood said.
Wood said they have many door prizes available, including cash prizes and grocery cards. While many registration cards have already been mailed out, seniors can still obtain a card at the WRJW radio station, located at 2438 Hwy. 43 S. Wood said.
There will also be entertainment provided by an oldies crooner, the Piney Wood Cloggers, Ed’s Country Classic and swing music will be played between live acts, Wood said.
Once again, Picayune Memorial High School’s softball team and Coach Kristi Mitchell will be selling concessions. This is their biggest fundraising event of the year, Wood said.
Saturday, the first 1,000 guests will receive a goody bag, she added.
During the fair, the Senior Citizen of the Year will be announced. Last year’s recipient was Johnny Baker, director of the Pearl River County Community Band.
The fair will be held Saturday, June 4 at the Picayune Memorial High School gymnasium located on 5th Avenue in Picayune from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
