On May 28, the non-profit group Animal Adoption Society Inc. will host their first “Pawty in the Park,” a fundraiser and adoption event.
The AAS is a volunteer and donation driven animal advocacy group providing shelter and adoption options for homeless animals, AAS president Evelyn Agnelly said in a previous coverage.
AAS vice-president Suzette Serio said the group is run entirely on donations and help from volunteers.
“This event provides an opportunity to help get pets adopted and raise funds so we can take care of the animals,” Serio said.
During the event, they will be selling Copeland’s of New Orleans red beans and rice for $2 a bowl, Serio said. There will also be a Coca-Cola trailer, gourmet cupcakes by Cakes Etc. and flavored candy apples for sale.
A variety of treats will also be available for the four-legged guests, including dog cookies and cupcakes, she added.
Pet supplies such as toys and bowls will be offered at a discounted price and Cale’s Food Supply has donated food and treat samples to hand out.
There will also be two or three raffles held during the event, Serio said. Arts and craft items will also be for sale.
At 1 p.m., there will be a pet costume contest.
“Any animal can compete as long as they are secured,” Serio said. “For example, dogs must be on a leash and cats in a carrier.”
The children can participate in art projects and pet owners can make paw print art, which can be used as a keepsake, Serio said.
From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., officials from Watts Veterinary Services will be on-site to clip claws, Agnelly said. They also ask that animals brought for nail clipping be secured.
Finally, dogs and cats fostered by AAS will be available for adoption. Prices will vary depending on the animal, Agnelly said.
Serio would like to invite every animal lover to come to the event and/or volunteer. They are also seeking students who are looking to earn community service hours. Group members have sent letters of recommendation to the college before, Serio added.
“We hope people will want to come out and have some fun,” Agnelly said.
“Pawty in the Park” will be held at Jack Read Park on Goodyear Boulevard in Picayune from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
