As a result of a social media post, the Item became aware of an incident that occurred Saturday night on Palestine Road in Picayune.
On March 27 at 9:08 p.m., officers with the Picayune Police Department were dispatched to the 900 block of Palestine Road in reference to a possible fight, Assistant Police Chief Jeremy Magri said.
Dispatchers advised responding officers that one male subject had a pipe while another male subject had a gun. Officers arrived to find them engaged in a verbal argument in the middle of the street, Magri said. A female subject, along with her dog, was also at the scene, the assistant police chief added.
Officers observed the male subject, later identified as 22-year-old Tyler Meyers of 25 Hunt Road, standing in the road holding a pipe and screaming obscenities at the male and female, Magri said.
Officers instructed Myers to drop the pipe and while speaking with him, smelled an intoxicating substance on his person and noticed his speech was slurred, Magri said.
Myers was taken into custody and charged with public drunkenness, the assistant police chief said.
Officers spoke with the male and female victim who stated they were walking their dog when Myers ran out of the shadows with a pipe yelling at them, Magri said.
The complainant stated that he thought Myers was going to strike them and drew his gun for self defense, Magri said.
The complainants were referred to the court clerk’s office to sign charges of simple assault by threat if they wished, Magri added.
Through further investigation, the incident is not believed to be an attempted robbery, but rather a misunderstanding from which a verbal argument ensued.
The Item’s attempts to reach the author of the social media post were not returned by press time Tuesday.
