Famous superheroes, villains and princesses will gather at the Middle School of Poplarville on Nov. 14 for the Poplarville Green Machine Band’s second annual Character Fantasy fundraiser.
Band Director Josh Tidwell said children in the community will be able to meet and greet with famous characters from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the MSP campus near the bus barn.
“Last year was our pilot program and we had a good turnout, so we want to keep it going and make it more popular,” Tidwell said.
Admission is $10 for children between the ages of 2 to 12. Accompanying adults will be admitted free of charge. Guests with three or more children will receive a discount, Tidwell said.
During the event, many of the band members from the middle and high school band will dress up in costumes, while others will offer fun activities, such as face painting, a beanbag toss and a tea party with Alice from “Alice in Wonderland.” Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase, Tidwell said.
Guests will be asked to park at the Poplarville High School Career and Development Center.
All proceeds from the event will go to the Poplarville Band Boosters. Last year, the band raised $1,000 during the event. Tidwell hopes to raise more money this year in order to pay for travel expenses.
“We get a certain amount from the school district for equipment, but this money we’re raising will help cover travel costs during competitions and football games and instrument repair and other items that need to be replaced,” Tidwell said.
The band is currently looking for volunteers to assist during the event and welcomes any food donations. For a complete list of the items needed, or to sign up as a volunteer, visit the band’s Facebook page at Poplarville Green Machine Band or email Tidwell at jtidwell@poplarvilleschools.org.
While the band is finished for the season, they will host a Christmas Concert on Dec. 8 at PRCC’s Brownstone Center for the Arts at 6:30 p.m. The event will cost $3 per person. The middle and high school chorus students will perform with the band, Tidwell said.
