The long, arduous race between Hudson Holliday and District 3 Supervisor incumbent Dennis W. Dedeaux came to a close Tuesday when Holliday won the seat by eight votes.

Tuesday, the remaining ballots, including several affidavits and one emergency ballot, were calculated into the results from the Republican primary runoff election, making Holliday the winner with a total of 1,063 votes. Dedeaux wasn’t too far behind with 1,055 votes.

The results from the primary election held on Aug. 4 led to the runoff election on Aug. 25, where several Republican candidates, including Holliday and Dedeaux, faced one another in their respective races.

Holliday said Dedeaux was a tough competitor and thanked him and Sylvester Lewis for running a clean campaign during the past several months. Holliday previously served as a county supervisor from 2008-2012 and hopes to bring his experience to the table in order to help the county move forward.

“There’s a lot of work to be done. I’m excited about the prospects for the future. My focus will be on changing the environment in the county to make it the best place in Mississippi,” Holliday said.

Dedeaux, who served as county supervisor for the past four years, didn’t allude to any future plans to run again and hopes the county’s supervisors “keep the people in mind and keep moving forward. We’ve got some goals for this county and I hope they keep them in mind.”

Circuit Clerk Vickie Hariel said of the 32 affidavit ballots received, 17 were certified, including an emergency ballot. The primary runoff election results were certified on Wednesday, Hariel said.

The remaining ballots didn’t affect the results of the other races, which included Melinda Smith Bowman, who led the Republican race for chancery clerk with 3,882 votes, beating out incumbent David Earl Johnson, who received 3,088 votes.

In the race for the circuit clerk office, Nance Fitzpatrick Stokes led the ticket with 4,005 votes, beating Sian B. Fazende who received 2,896 votes.

For the position of Constable Southeast, incumbent Ray Merle Bennett led with 1,019 votes beating Larry P. ‘Dusty’ Dillard, Jr. who received 679 votes.

Several winners of the primary election and the runoff will face their democratic challengers in their respective races during the general election on Nov. 3.

Residents can still register to vote until Oct. 3.
