Greek activities going too far?

Fraternities and sororities are notorious for their elaborate initiations and parties. Unfortunately, many have made headlines in the past for engaging in illegal activities, which sometimes result in someone getting hurt.
Recently, several members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity from the University of Southern Mississippi were arrested after an alleged fraternity scavenger hunt in the Hattiesburg Zoo led to the deaths of two Chilean flamingos back in October.
A fraternity member was indicted for grand larceny and conspiracy for his involvement.
Recently, a Forrest County grand jury indicted six more suspects on the same charges. According to Forrest County police, the zoo’s surveillance video showed the fraternity members illegally entering the zoo in the early morning and an eyewitness report said they climbed the zoo’s fence with a large bird, the Sun Herald reported.
It’s unfortunate that young college students with so much promise engage in these illegal activities for the sake of their fraternity.
It seems as though there’s recently been more negative news about fraternities than positive and that needs to change.
College students are educated enough to know right from wrong and shouldn’t be involved in these situations.
However, no one is perfect and hopefully they learned their lesson.
Fraternities and sororities need to choose their activities carefully. No activity that could possibly endanger lives should be undertaken. It’s simply not worth the risk.
This is not to say all fraternity activities should be banned. However, every member should use common sense before planning an activity.
College students should think twice before risking their lives or anyone else’s.
Often, students may feel peer pressure within these communities but they need to stand up for what’s right to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
